Creative Playscapes is the celebration of a collaborative research project developed by The Hundred Club, TACO!, and Walter Stabb and Hadi Bastani from the University of Greenwich. This research asks – how can creative work that centres children and families as artistic producers, filmmakers, designers and authors of knowledge help to shape the future of our built environment and make cities playful, happy, healthy places to grow and live? 

The Hundred Club is an experimental creative space that uses arts and play for children to explore social justice issues. The Hundred Club is free and open to 5-12 year olds and their siblings, parents and carers. The club meets monthly in and around Thamesmead, Abbeywood, Plumstead and Woolwich. This exhibition draws together children’s artwork from over twenty Hundred Club sessions undertaken in collaboration with artists and designers exploring listening, looking and play, neighbourhoods, and the built environment that took place from 2024 to 2026.  

On the walls and in the soundscape are the photographs and recordings made by children during mapping sessions of Thamesmead and the local area. The screens show slideshows of creative workshops with different artists and a new film by Walter Stabb and Hadi Bastani, made in collaboration with the children. On the table are drawings and materials printed at TACO!’s print studio, including WAAAAH!, the Hundred Club’s kids-made newspaper, which includes thoughts and writing by children on a diverse range of social concerns and ideas, including on play & playgrounds, estates, belonging, housing, social justice, the environment, and public space.   

The Hundred Club is produced by TACO! as part of our Young Artists Programme. It was founded in 2021 by artist Ruth Beale in collaboration with TACO! and now involves a range of artists sharing their practices in workshops and projects with children and families. A family steering group helps shape the programme.
