From Code to Clay: Re-imagining Materiality in a Machine-Learning World is a collaborative exhibition between the University of Greenwich and WRO Art Center, bringing together artists and researchers to explore how materiality is being transformed by digital technologies, machine learning and ecological crisis. At a moment when computation is increasingly framed as immaterial, the exhibition foregrounds the physical infrastructures, natural resources, labour and living systems that sustain our digital worlds.
The exhibition considers materiality as something relational and continually reconfigured; across a wide heterogeneity of works, artists investigate extractive landscapes, invisible networks, synthetic ecosystems and emerging forms of machine-generated creativity. Materials here act as agents and repositories of knowledge, while questioning the political and environmental conditions through which new technologies are produced.
Curated by Elena Papadaki and Klio Krajewska, From Code to Clay creates a space for encounters between different material imaginaries, opening questions around friction, time, extraction, symbiosis, computation and the possibility of more situated technological futures.
