CATALOGUE LAUNCH & JAIME GILI PUBLIC LECTURE – Phase IV

  • 14th Feb 2020
  • 5:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Project Space

On Friday 14 February we are hosting a public lecture by exhibitor  Jaime Gili, followed by a private view and launch of the Phase IV Exhibition Catalogue.

The exhibition, talks, and symposium are jointly led by Benet Spencer and Dr David Ryan (Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University), in collaboration with David Waterworth (University of Greenwich).

Jaime Gili

Jaime Gili was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1972 and now lives in London. His work has been contextualised as a critical development of Latin American abstraction—especially Venezuelan visual art from the 20th Century—or, as an art critic once put it, as “a mix of Pop, Minimalism, Vorticism, Futurism and Street art”.

Gili received his MA in painting from the Royal College of Art (London) in 1998, after studying in Caracas (IDD and Prodiseño) and Barcelona (Universitat de Barcelona). He has exhibited widely in the US, Europe and many Latin American countries, especially his native Venezuela.

His recent exhibitions in London and New York, have enquired into the (im)possibility of painting and abstraction, tackling current affairs in the context of his native Venezuela and the UK.

For two decades he has embraced an expanded understanding of painting, not only on canvas but in the form of small scale murals and large site-specific installations on and about architecture designed directly with architects. These can be found in private and public buildings, like the ones produced in London, Miami, and Portland Maine.
