Vince Bevan, Nicky King, fisherman, Wells-next-the-Sea, north Norfolk, constructing crab pots in his shed.
Nicky started fishing professionally at 15 and is a member of the Wells-next-the-Sea lifeboat crew.
Vince Bevan, Pete Miles, fisherman, chef and owner of Storm Fish Restaurant and Dorset Oysters in Poole, aboard his boat 'Esperance' in Poole Harbour.
The flag is flying at half mast out of respect for Bill Hayes, a well known local fisherman and lifeboatman, who had died recently aged 92. Bill was from an old fishing family in Poole and it was him who taught Pete how to fish and handle a boat, while fishing together for many years.
Vince Bevan, Carl and his dog Keta, at sea aboard the trawler 'Risten', whose home port is Le Guilvinec, France. The boat is mainly fishing for Nephrops (Langoustine), but has a smaller by-catch of other species.
Most of the time Keta displayed a lack of interest in the fish, but kept a keen lookout for any conga eels. Whenever one was landed he would chase it around the deck relentlessly until it could be placed out of his reach.
The fleet leaves between 3am and 5am each morning, returning between 4pm and 5pm the same day. In the summer months, the returning boats are greeted by hundreds of onlookers, both locals and tourists, to watch the spectacle of the catch being landed and ferried into the market for the fish auction.
The Landscapes of Fishing is a stunning collection of images by internationally renowned photo-journalist Vince Bevan. The photographs portray the richness and diversity of inshore fishing in the four countries bordering the Southern North Sea and the English Channel: France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands. These photographs offer a poignant reminder of an industry struggling to survive against a backdrop of strict regulation and quota restrictions. Regardless of all its current challenges, this historic profession continues to contribute to the character and identity of coastal communities across Europe, for the benefit of residents and tourists alike. This collection of photographs have been exhibited at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall (UK), the Oostende Library (Belgium) and De Drvkkery (Netherlands) in 2014.
The exhibition was put together as part of the GIFS project (Geography of Inshore Fishing and Sustainability) and co-funded by INTERREG IVA 2 Seas project.
